I live surrounded by the ocean and mountains of Hawaii, so nature plays a huge part in my daily routine. Living in Oahu has really forced me to notice how small eco-friendly efforts can add up to help improve the environment and our quality of life. Keeping sustainability top of mind every day has helped me embrace all that is natural, be a more mindful consumer, and live a more conscious lifestyle. So needless to say, when it comes to my beauty routine, I take a more minimalist approach. I strive to play up my natural glow whenever possible, find products that do double duty, and always gravitate toward a "less is more" attitude. That means less time spent fussing in front of a mirror and less impact on Mama Earth.
Here’s a peek into my day-to-day tips for a minimalist beauty routine inspired by nature:

1. I go for double-duty products.

Looking for double-duty products means you’ll buy less and therefore have a lighter footprint and also save time. For instance, I’ll throw waterproof mascara onto my lashes and use it to lightly touch up my brows. Another product I use religiously is AVEENO® Positively Radiant Sheer Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. It’s non-greasy, lightweight yet hydrating, and I can use it as a base layer knowing it’s protecting my face when I’m beaching it, walking a trail, or just out adventuring outside.

2. I buy in bulk.

Buying multipurpose products in bulk helps me reduce waste and save money in the long run. I always keep huge tubs of coconut oil (an awesome source of good fats), activated charcoal (great for removing toxins), coconut sugar (a wonderful exfoliator), essential oils (nature’s perfume), and baking soda (an odor neutralizer) on hand. I’ll use these natural raw materials by themselves or combine them to make my own concoctions like face masks and scrubs, deodorant, teeth whitener, body lotions, and cleaning products.

3. I upcycle old containers.

For those times I don’t shop in bulk, I try to look for products that come in recyclable packaging and think up creative ways to reuse the packaging I do acquire. For example, with my AVEENO® Positively Radiant Sheer Daily Moisturizer, I can re-use it as travel-size containers for shampoo and conditioner or coconut oil, which is perfect since I’m always on-the-go!

4. I know that green means GO!

Over the years, green has become a favorite color for sure. Loading up on all things green is a recipe for a revitalizing natural glow. Think: green smoothies, fresh-squeezed juices, big green salads, spirulina powder, and green veggies consumed on the daily. They’re packed with antioxidants, minerals, and so many nutrients that are great for the skin.
Buying local, organic produce supports the local economy and community, and you can get it fresh when it’s ripe and at its peak while avoiding unnecessary pesticides and chemicals. Hello, health and beauty from the inside out!

Jessica Biel Reveals Her Go-To Beauty Routine (& Its Surprisingly Simple)
BILL DAVILA, COURTESY OF AMERICAN EXPRESS
When it comes to beauty, Jessica Biel is a firm believer in “less is more.”
Biel recently hosted a preview for American Express’s “Live Life” global brand campaign, where she chatted with PureWow about the minimal beauty products she keeps in her purse while on the go. She said, “My go-to’s are fewer beauty products but more tools, so I like having an eyelash curler, maybe an eyebrow pencil—that’s always good for a little definition—and blotting tissue to take the oil off my face.”
Biel also revealed that beauty isn’t just about the oils and creams you put on your skin, saying, “Less is more, and make sure you put healthy foods inside your body helps with clean skin along with hydrating and drinking a lot of water.”
Nevertheless, she still relies on her skin care regimen—cleanser, toner, moisturizer, eye cream and an occasional face peel—to achieve her glowing complexion.
We’ll do whatever she’s doing, because it’s clearly working.

Whether you’ve been covering up those pesky grays since your early twenties or you’ve dabbled with coloring over your natural hue, there are some myths floating around out there about hair coloring. Fear not, we’re here to set the record straight. Below, seven myths about coloring your strands that simply aren’t true.

MYTH 1: COLORING HAIR STRIPS AWAY VOLUME

Truth: Quite the contrary. The lightening agents used to color your hair make the cuticle swell, so individual strands appear thicker and fuller. And when it comes to coloring your hair, swelling is actually a good thing. The more swollen the hair shaft, the easier it is for the color to stick.

MYTH 2: COLORING YOUR HAIR CAN BE DAMAGING

Truth: When you apply dye to your hair, you’re opening up the cuticle so that color can be deposited, and yes, that causes damage. But using the right product can help prevent it. Take the new Clairol Nice ’n Easy formula, for instance. It has damage-blocking technology* and there are conditioners at every step—even a complimentary tube of CC+ Color Conditioner—to keep your strands hydrated and help block breakage.

MYTH 3: YOU SHOULD COLOR YOUR EYEBROWS TO MATCH YOUR HAIR

Truth: Not necessarily. In fact, we’re huge fans of having a slight contrast between your hair color and your brows. Plus, darker brows frame your face better than lighter ones do.

MYTH 4: IT’S OK TO WASH YOUR HAIR RIGHT AFTER A COLOR TREATMENT

Truth: You should wait at least a full 72 hours before washing your hair after coloring. Why? That’s how long it takes for the hair cuticles to fully close, which traps in the color. Once you start washing your hair again, use lukewarm or cool water to prevent your strands from drying out. Oh, and the pool is a no-go for at least two weeks—the chlorine will strip the cuticles, allowing minerals to get into the shaft and alter your hue. No thank you.

MYTH 5: AT-HOME HAIR COLOR KITS ARE HARD TO USE

Truth: Your nerves are getting the best of you. At-home kits are very user-friendly these days, and there’s no need to feel intimidated. Look to the new Clairol Nice ’n Easy to get the job done without any mishaps. It has a new crème formula (that smells like lilies, for the record), doesn’t drip and offers precise application. Plus, it only takes about 25 minutes from start to finish.

MYTH 6: YOU CAN APPLY HAIR COLOR AT ANY TIME

Truth: In order for the color to effectively bond to your hair, your locks need to be somewhat clean. Why? Since the dye needs to penetrate the cuticle, your hair needs to be free of any built-up product (especially wax). This can also prevent the color from distributing evenly. It’s best to color hair that has been washed 24 to 48 hours prior, because the natural oils will protect your scalp from any irritation.

MYTH 7: FANCY SHAMPOO FOR COLOR-TREATED HAIR IS OVERRATED

Truth: Investing in products that are specially designed for color-treated hair is worth it and can save you money in the long run. Here’s why: These products not only prevent color from fading fast (limiting the number of trips back to the salon) but also help restore shine and moisture (two qualities that can be stripped away after a color job).

Joann van den Herik’s profile as a model is growing, especially on social media.
Soon you’ll be seeing her on billboards sporting lingerie from Debenhams and after reading these facts about her, you’ll see why they were quick to snap her up for their campaign.
Here are eight things you should know about curve model-on-the-rise Joann van den Herik.

She is...

Debenhams New DD+ model

The 19-year-old is a fashion world up-and-comer, who just landed her first UK campaign modelling Debenhams’ DD+ lingerie line.
DEBENHAMS

Related To The Hadids

Van den Herik is related to Gigi and Bella Hadid. She is their cousin, being the daughter of one of Yolanda Hadid’s siblings.
And it’s not just the women in the family making a name for themselves as models. Gigi and Bella’s younger brother, Anwar, is also a model, who debuted at Tommy Hilfiger’s SS18 catwalk during London Fashion Week.

Body Positive

Like all models, Van den Herik’s Instagram feed is filled with perfectly lit images in various flattering scenarios. She does, however, also post empoweringmessages - a voice the fashion industry needs to hear more from.
Using her platform of over 58K Instagram followers, she aims to empower others to love their own bodies by writing about her experiences with body shaming and bullying.
“I felt like I was nothing just because I had a different body type,” she wrote on 23 January. “It’s easier said than done but: Don’t let people’s words get to you.”
DEBENHAMS

Anti Retouching

Often posting comparison photos of herself with and without Photoshop to make a point about self acceptance and natural beauty, it’s not surprising that van den Herik chose not to have her campaign photos retouched for her first major UK gig.
DEBENHAMS
Though some may argue that she comes from a position of privilege - with her ideal proportions and the help of her cousins to give her fiercest poses - van den Herik’s choice to show realness is still commendable as many others in her position would not do so.

Dutch

The name might’ve been a bit of a giveaway, but the model is neither American nor Palestinian like her successful cousins, but actually Dutch.

Anti Slut-Shaming

Among her Insta-friendly photos, she also shares thought-provoking posts like this one with wry humour.

Taking An Active Stand Against The Idea That Models Can Only Have One Type Of Body

Van den Herik made a conscious decision to accept her body and go against the grain of the fashion industry.
“I was literally obsessed with my body and losing weight, just because everyone kept telling me I should look like the models on the magazine covers and I didn’t look like that,” she told  HuffPost US.
“I’m finally at a point where I accept myself and my body. I look in the mirror and tell myself every day ‘I LOVE MY CURVES!’”
DEBENHAMS

Signed To A British Agency

Van den Herik is signed to London-based model agency 12+, a leading agency representing plus size models. Being from a famous family, with powerful connections in the fashion industry, she could potentially have had her pick of agencies.
The fact that she chose to be represented by an agency that empowers curvier women speaks volumes to how seriously she takes her values on body positivity.

If you ever smeared a half inch-thick circle of black eyeliner under your eyes as a teen—and didn’t we all?—then you already know full well how tricky bottom eyeliner can do. Do it correctly and you’ve got natural-looking definition that goes perfectly on its own or with other eye makeup; do it wrong and you look ten years older and ten hours more sleep-deprived.
Fortunately, applying eyeliner to your lower lid the right way isn’t actually hard; it just needs to be approached with a bit more caution. Get your freshly sharpened liner pencil at the ready, and you’ll have mastered the perfect bottom eyeliner look in no time.
Keep your lines thin.
Take a hint from Kate Middleton‘s worst—and perhaps only—recurring beauty faux pas and keep eyeliner on the lower lid thin and inconspicuous. The obvious pitfall of bottom eyeliner is that it can create the impression of dark circles beneath your eyes, which is distinctly undesirable. Keeping the line thin and soft by using the side of the tip of your liner pencil rather than pressing down is key for not enhancing under eye darkness (which, let’s face it, we all have).
Line only the outer three quarters of the eye, avoiding the inner corner entirely.
Adding dark liner to the inner corner of the eye “closes” the eye and makes it look smaller—that’s what you don’t want. Instead, use a light hand to sketch out a soft line just below your bottom lashes so that there’s a bit of waterline exposed to keep the area looking light. It’ll add the definition you’re going for without changing the proportions of your eyes.
Don’t line the inside rim.
Lining the waterline in black to define the eyes has grown in popularity in the past few years, but we strongly advise that you don’t do it, especially on the lower lash line. Not only will it make your eyes look darker and smaller (are we sensing a theme here?) but the potential eye health repercussions—infection, itchiness, and just run of the mill irritation—make it even more unappealing. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Be careful about blending.
You want to blend the liner into the lash line and at the edges so it looks naturally defined rather than harsh, but blending too much can cast a grayish shadow around the area, which will again contribute to the appearance of dark circles. Blend upward and side to side, and if you notice the liner starting to make eyes look a little dull, it’s time to stop blending and start cleaning up.
Always clean up afterward.
Yes, always. Dark, smudgy liner that extends too far down past there lash line will make you look tired and worse for the wear, not bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. A tapered Q-tip dipped in makeup remover will get the job done, and clean up the area so that your eyes stand out the way you want them to—as in, people will ask you how to get the same look, not if you’ve been up all night.
