Whether or not you watched Queen Mother Beyoncé’s Coachella performance, you’re likely aware that festival season is upon us. The sun is coming out. Instagrams posts featuring highly stylized outfits in front of large ferris wheels are coming in. And you may have noticed that the population of festival-goers is changing. It’s not just EDM teens and burners and white girls in headdresses out there rolling in the desert, and it's all because the pastime is becoming more accessible and well-rounded than ever before. Getting wasted and doing molly aren’t your only recreational options anymore. Instead of coming down from something(s) you popped the night before, you can now do things that are... good for your body all festival long.

Take the Okeechobee Festival in South Florida, which debuted in 2016. The 4-day shindig was designed to focus on equal parts music, art, and wellness. In terms of the latter, the lineup is wild with exploratory wellness programming ranging from cacao ceremonies to didgeridoo sound odysseys. Yogachobee hosts acro yoga, energy flow yoga, stillness meditation and improv dancing. At the festival’s Healing Sanctuary, attendees could unwind with energy healing, Thai massages, body work, and other restorative practices. There were mind-expanding workshops on learning astro travel and the power of creating rituals. This year, Okeechobee partnered with The Big Quiet to host a mass meditation from the MainStage. There was a lightly guided sound meditation, music performances, and a group song that was joined by headlining musicians like Arcade Fire and Local Natives.

“The fact that these artists wanted to be involved just further showed us that not only are these types of holistic experiences something that our attendees are craving, but something that our artists are craving as well,” says Emily Kessler who works with Soundslinger, the company that produces Okeechobee. They've also noted that people are craving better food—both from a health and a quality perspective. “There is a current trend in the festival landscape to incorporate well-known local and national restaurants and bars into the festival’s culinary experience. Festivals like Coachella have done a great job of this and they have elevated the food and drink offerings to a place you would never expect to find at a festival.”

Coachella isn't just an event: it’s an institution, and it’s one that sets trends. The next time you grab a cold brew or poke bowl at a music festival, you can thank Nic Adler. The culinary director of Goldenvoice, the company that makes the 'chella happen, got into the business of reinventing festival food nine years ago after trudging through years of festivals as a vegan. Back in the day, things were bleak for festivalgoers with dietary restrictions (or any particular interest in food). After throwing successful food festivals of his own, Adler was hired by Goldenvoice to take over the Coachella F&B programming. While Coachella had been selling fresh coconuts and even raw food before Adler’s time, there was more than enough room for improvement. “On day three or at like two in the morning on Saturday night, you’re really not like mmm, give me some raw food,” says Adler. “There has to be more options.” Now you can find standard festival fare like pizza, sure, but also Korean rice bowls, vegan ramen, fried chicken sandwiches and dessert tacos. There are chef-driven Outstanding in the Field dinners, a tiki bar, a kombucha bar with kombucha "sommeliers", and even secret non-alcoholic bars.

That movement towards festival programming that doesn’t make attendees feel horrible has spread. At Governors Ball, you can skip the beer lines in favor of a juice bar or iced matcha station, and then head to the festival’s Sober Ball activation to meet other abstainers to party with all weekend. Tennessee's Bonnaroo has a Soberoo Community Camp so you can pitch your tent alongside like minded revelers. The festival is also building a new wellness barn this June to host even more healthful activities (like exercise meetups) than its normal yoga and race around the grounds. Lightning in a Bottle will be back on its bullshit at the end of May with what it calls “Health and Healing” experiences bringing in wellness experts from around the world to help attendees “reset and restore.” When you’re done with your guru session, you can join the 5k, or take a dance class, or learn about ancient cooking traditions at a workshop in the Learning Kitchen.

Having healing sanctuaries and supplementary entertainment at festivals may speak to the tastes of an aging festival population, or those of the new youths attending. Maybe being fucked up beyond recognition isn’t en vogue anymore. “I don’t want to speak on this generation or this next generation, but I think there is something about being a little more in the moment,” Adler says. “Maybe drinking isn’t as important, or some of those other things, and just kind of being is. I think we’re starting to see a little more trend of that.” And if that’s not the case, at least there’s a sound bath or Milkbar confections around to comfort your crash.
